His name is Olubankole Wellington (born March 27, 1981), known under the stage name Banky W. He is an American Nigerian R&B artist, born in America to Nigerian parents and spending his growing years in Africa, he attended primary and secondary school in Nigeria, after completing his secondary school education at Home Science Association Secondary School, he moved to New York to attend college on a scholarship; earning a degree in Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). While still a junior in RPI, he started writing, producing and hitting studios in order to release something in the USA. While still in college, he formed Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E), a label he envisioned as a platform for his music and the home of uber-songwriting and production duo ‘Muzik Men’.
At an early age, Banky learnt to appreciate both the beauty and the sorrows of living in the motherland; where somehow, believing in God helped him survive his life’s struggles. His music and his life story have catapulted him into the spotlight, but a closer look there lays a young man reflective of us all, he struggled with cancer but survived and faced many hardships while studying in the USA.
He soon came up with debut release, the award-winning Undeniable: The E.P and the critically acclaimed Back in the Buildin' before a move to Nigeria which saw the releases of the innovative album Mr. Capable in 2008 and the groundbreaking The W Experience album in 2009 which birthed the Number 1 singles "Strong Thing" and "Lagos Party" it also introduces his newly signed E.M.E acts, Wizkid and Skales; and solidifies Banky W as the crown Prince of African Soul/R&B. It also garnered Banky W many awards and award nominations from the Soundcity Music Awards, to the MOBO Awards to the MTV Awards to the KORA Awards and more.
